Holdings of Catholic records about Native Americans: Christian Brothers Midwest Province Archives

History: Saint John Baptist de la Salle (1651-1719) founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools (Christian Brothers) in France in 1680. The Christian Brothers made its first Mississippi valley (Genevieve, Missouri) foundation in 1819.  The Midwest Province succeeded the St. Louis Province in 1955. However, Christian Brothers from both provinces staffed the following Catholic schools, which have served Native American students:

1907-1913	St. John School (Osage), Gray Horse, Osage Reservation, Oklahoma
1900-present	De La Salle High School (Ojibwa), Minneapolis, Minnesota; occasional native students
2001-2011	San Miguel School (Ojibwa), Minneapolis, Minnesota; occasional native students
2001-present	De La Salle Blackfeet School (Siksika), Browning, Blackfeet Reservation, Montana

Description: The Christian Brothers, Midwest Province Archives contain records of four schools that served Native Americans. These records are not organized according to a classification scheme. Consequently, the description is by record type.
