History: Sacred Heart Church, Chevak, Kusilvak Census Area, Alaska, has been a predominantly Native American (Cupik Eskimo) parish on the Bering Sea coast in the Diocese of Fairbanks (Archives: Fairbanks, Alaska). (Cupik is a distinct dialect of the Yupik Eskimo language.)

1928-1935

Jesuits (Oregon Province) (Archives: St. Louis, Missouri) visited Old Chevak (Cupik Eskimo)

1935-1950

Jesuits from Little Flower, Hooper Bay, established and attended St. John the Baptist Mission (Cupik Eskimo), Old Chevak

1950

To avoid periodic flooding, the residents of Old Chevak relocated the community to the site of New Chevak

1950-1989, 1990s

Jesuits established and administered Sacred Heart Church (Cupik Eskimo), New Chevak

1983-present

Visiting Fairbanks diocesan priests and diocesan ministry team members have ministered to Sacred Heart

1980s-present

Permanent deacons (Cupik Eskimo) and lay ministers (Cupik Eskimo) have served the parish and assisted with its administration

Jesuits and Fairbanks diocesan priests at Sacred Heart attended to Holy Family Mission (Yupik Eskimo), Newtok, 1952-1990 (became a parish).
