NEWS FOR PARENTS
FAFSA deadline reminder
Marquette students must complete and submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid every year to be considered for assistance. The Office of Student Financial Aid recommends having the FAFSA filed and submitted no later than Feb. 15 so it can be processed and sent to Marquette by the March 1 priority deadline. You and your student will need your own federal PIN to electronically sign the FAFSA, which is completed and submitted online. You can apply for a federal PIN or request a duplicate online.
If the FAFSA is received by Marquette after the March 1 Priority Deadline, financial aid could be reduced or eliminated due to limited funding. Any required documents must also be submitted to Marquette Central within 30 days of the student's initial request for missing documents. Missing documents are listed on Checkmarq. Questions can be directed to Marquette Central, (414) 288-4000.

Classroom assignments for the spring semester are now posted in CheckMarq. Students who cannot locate where a course is meeting should contact the department offering the course.

Spring break service trips offered through Campus Ministry
For more than 30 years, Campus Ministry has provided service trips during spring break. The Marquette Action Program, or MAP trips, are organized within the themes of urban poverty, rural poverty, education, diversity and justice. Each site provides students the change to live simply and work hand-in-hand with a community in need for one week. An informational meeting on the trips is Jan. 17 and applications are due Jan. 23. Bystander intervention training promoted by VP of Student Affairs
Earlier today, Christopher L. Miller, vice president of the Division of Student Affairs, sent an email to students encouraging them to participate in bystander intervention training. The training is one of Marquette's new initiatives to help educate and empower students to identify risky situations and environments and how to respond. He also highlighted some new programs and campus events for the upcoming semester.
Study abroad deadlines for 2013-14
All students planning to study abroad in the summer or fall of 2012, or for the entire 2012-13 academic year, need to have applications completed by Friday, March 1.
Marquette's Office of International Education provides a variety of programs and support for students to study abroad at more than 70 locations around the globe. OIE will hold a study abroad fair on Friday, Feb. 1, and region-specific information sessions Feb. 3 to 11.
In addition to semester-long programs, Marquette faculty members are leading eight summer programs in locations such as Bolivia, China, Finland and South Africa.
General application requirements include completing an online form, submitting an essay and soliciting letter(s) of recommendation. Latest edition of student health magazine now available
The January issue of Student Health 101 is now available. The monthly online magazine offers interactive content on various health topics. Access to the magazine is sponsored by Marquette's Student Health Service and the Counseling Center. Every month, a quick read summary is also available for parents.
MARQUETTE EVENTS
The annual gathering with the Parents Association to watch a men's basketball game is Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, when Marquette takes on Pittsburgh. A block of tickets has been reserved for Marquette parents and are available for $22 each on a first-come, first-served basis. You can purchase tickets online and see our recommendations for pre- and post-game dining. Tickets in the block will be mailed to you prior to the game. Please contact Molly Eldridge in University Advancement, (414) 288-4497, with questions or if you have special needs. The Marquette community will reflect on our university's Catholic, Jesuit identity during Mission Week, Feb. 4-8. The theme for the week is "The World is our Home," and will honor 10 recipients of the annual million-dollar Opus Prize for faith-based social entrepreneurship. With an innovative spirit and abiding faith, these social entrepreneurs have fought seemingly intractable global issues such as poverty, illiteracy, hunger, disease and violations of human rights.
Online parents chat, Feb. 27
Marquette University staff members from around campus will host an online chat Wednesday, Feb. 27, between noon and 1 p.m. CST. Staff will be available to answer questions about academic advising, housing selection and spring break, which occur shortly after the online chat. Staff will also be prepared to answer questions about academic support, relationships with roommates and friends, safety, student involvement, student employment, health, and financial aid.
Register for the chat online to receive an email reminder about the event. Transcripts from past chats are available online.
