Marquette honors Little Rock Nine
As part of the Centennial Celebration of Women at Marquette, the university will confer the Père Marquette Discovery Award, the university’s highest honor, on the Little Rock Nine Feb. 9. This courageous group of nine teenagers dared to challenge racial segregation in public schools by enrolling at the all-white Central High School in 1957 and became an integral part of the fight for equal opportunity in American education. This short video documents the group’s heroic actions.
This is only the fifth time Marquette has presented the Discovery Award, which was created in 1969. Previous recipients include the crew of the Apollo 11, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins in 1969; German theologian Rev. Karl Rahner, S.J., in 1979; Mother Teresa of India in 1981; and Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa in 2003. The award honors those who achieve an extraordinary breakthrough that adds to human knowledge or the advancement of humanity.
Important financial aid deadline
Marquette students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid each year to be considered for assistance. The Office of Student Financial Aid recommends having the FAFSA filed and submitted no later than Feb. 15. This ensures the FAFSA is processed and sent to Marquette by the March 1 priority deadline. You and your student will need your own federal PIN numbers to electronically sign the FAFSA, which is completed and submitted online. You can apply for a federal PIN or request a duplicate online.
If Marquette receives a FASFA after the March 1 priority deadline, financial aid could be reduced or eliminated due to limited funding. Any required documents must also be submitted to the Marquette Office of Student Financial Aid within 45 days of the office’s initial request for missing documents, which are listed on CheckMarq. Questions can be directed to Marquette Central at (414) 288-4000.
Bills sent by mail to be discontinued
Beginning with their March 2010 bill for tuition, housing and fees, students will only receive an e-mail notice of their balance due; they will no longer receive a printed bill at their permanent mailing address. Students with a balance due have been receiving a bill via both e-mail and postal service since September. Students will receive bills via both methods for the last time for their February 2010 statement, scheduled to be sent the first week in February. Payments can still be made online, in person at Marquette Central or through the postal service.
For their e-mail bill, students receive notice via their eMarq e-mail account. The e-mail links to CheckMarq, where students can view their billing statement online at any time. Students can also create guest accounts on CheckMarq to provide access for parents, guardians and others to view their grades, bursar account and financial aid information. Students may share the login information for their guest account with anyone they choose. Students control the access and the password and can change them at any time. Only students with an outstanding balance receive an e-mail bill notice.
Students and parents who call Marquette Central with questions must provide the student’s Marquette Central Access Number and MUID number to verify their right to access the student’s information. The MCAN has been added to comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations. The MCAN was initially assigned randomly in November, but students can change it via CheckMarq at any time.
Marquette offers support and prayers to Haiti
The images and stories of devastation in Haiti are astounding and call the Marquette community to respond with compassion. On Jan. 21 the Church of the Gesu held a Mass in support of the people of Haiti, and all the collections at Marquette Masses through Feb. 13 will be donated to Catholic Relief Services and Jesuit Refugee Services/USA. Additional educational programs and fundraisers on campus are posted on a dedicated Web site along with prayers for the residents of Haiti.

Residence Life seeks feedback from students
The Office of Residence Life has e-mailed a survey to all students living in residence halls (Abbottsford, Cobeen, Mashuda, McCabe, McCormick, O’Donnell and Schroeder Halls, and Carpenter and Straz Towers). The survey is administered annually and is a standardized instrument used nationally to assess the residence life experience.
The survey is an opportunity for students to provide feedback on their residence hall experience, including questions on dining, facilities, programming and staff; it takes approximately 25 minutes to complete.
The survey is one of many ways the university seeks feedback from students to help guide and gauge changes related residence halls. Students must complete the survey by Thursday, Feb. 4. A similar survey, also due Feb. 4, was sent to students living in university-owned apartments.
Study Abroad Fair highlights new programs
On Thursday, Jan. 28, Marquette will host its spring semester campus-wide study abroad fair. It is an excellent opportunity for students and faculty to learn what programs Marquette offers, including new faculty-led summer programs, and to speak with program representatives and the staff of the Office of International Education. Marquette has made some exciting additions to its study abroad portfolio for the spring 2010 semester, including eight new semester and summer program offerings, and a new online study abroad application and advising system.

Public Safety transportation reminders
The Department of Public Safety provides a number of services to help students travel safely on and around campus during the evenings.
From 5 p.m. to midnight students can request escorts to travel with them to their destination. The escorts wear reflective jackets and carry two-way radios, allowing them immediate contact with Public Safety’s communication center. The escorts can be requested by phone, stopping a team on the street or by picking up a Blue Light Phone.
From 5 p.m. to 3 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, and 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays, students can take advantage of DPS’s LIMO program. Blue door-to-door LIMO vans travel within an established service area, encompassing the campus and a large portion of the immediate off-campus area, and can be requested by phone, by flagging a LIMO down or by picking up a Blue Light Phone. The LIMO Express vehicles, easily identifiable white mini buses, run two routes: one services a loop on Wisconsin Avenue and Wells Street, and the other on Wisconsin Avenue and Kilbourn Avenue. LIMO Express vans can stop anywhere along those routes and need to be simply waved down. Door-to-door LIMOs operate year round, while LIMO Express operate during the academic year.
