Join us for the 2026 Douglass Day Transcribe-a-Thon, an annual event that celebrates the life and legacy of abolitionist, orator, and author Frederick Douglass. Marquette will join groups across the country to transcribe historical correspondance, articles, and other documents related to the Colored Conventions—a decades-long, nationwide Black organizing campaign in the 19th century that set the stage for the Civil Rights era.
What is transcribing? It's simple! Stop by with a laptop, connect to the official transcription site, select a historical document you'd like to transcribe, view the scanned image of that document, and type out the words you see. In this way, you'll make the contents of the document searchable—and learn more about Black history while you're at it.
Stop by the transcription station anytime 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., February 13, in the Lemonis Center for Student Success 2nd-floor open study area. Plan to bring a laptop; we'll provide the instructions to get you started.
A note for instructors: The transcribe-a-thon is an excellent supplemental learning opportunity. We encourage you to invite your students to participate for extra credit.
