Media advisory: Veterans Day story ideas from Marquette University

Nov. 4, 2019

church of the gesu flagMILWAUKEE — With Veterans Day approaching, Marquette University offers the following story ideas to help with coverage:

  • Marquette University’s Army ROTC Golden Eagle Battalion is hosting a Veterans Day breakfast beginning at 7:45 a.m., Friday, Nov. 8, in room 227 of the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave. The event will celebrate Veterans Day with a contracting ceremony recognizing the newest round of cadets, their commitment to the country and their willingness to serve as officers in the United States Army. The event will also honor aviation Capt. James E. Wenzel, who died in 1963 while serving during the Vietnam War. Email Capt. Hyeon Kim at hyeon.kim@marquette.edu.
  • Dr. Frank A. Pintar, professor and chair of biomedical engineering for Marquette and Medical College of Wisconsin, and director of VA Neuroscience Labs, shares the work he and colleagues are doing to help the Army design a new blast-test dummy. The new dummy is meant to aid military vehicle designers in creating systems to prevent lower limb, pelvic and spine injuries in the event of an explosion beneath a military vehicle. The five-year project has resulted in a working prototype. Email him at frank.pintar@marquette.edu.
  • Dr. James Marten, history department chair and professor in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, outlines some Veterans Day history. Marten has studied Civil War veterans extensively and is knowledgeable about homes built for disabled soldiers after the war. One such home, in particular, is located near Miller Park. Built in the 1860s, the home eventually became the Veterans Administration. Other original buildings, he will highlight, are now being restored and will be used as veteran housing. Email him at james.marten@marquette.edu.
