Frieder, who has served in various roles at the university for more than two decades, is recognized by many as kindhearted and fiercely professional with a unique ability to relate to and help others — making him an invaluable member of the Marquette community.

Frieder demonstrates the Ignatian ideal of caring for others through his everyday work, interactions with colleagues and the ways in which his efforts positively impact the community. As part of President Michael R. Lovell’s leadership team, Frieder works with President Lovell and other senior administrators on a wide variety of issues related to students, alumni and parents. Additionally, he has a longstanding commitment to the continuous improvement of the student experience at Marquette.

One person who nominated Frieder for the award wrote that Frieder demonstrated incomparable leadership and empathy in caring for senior engagement officer Martha Moore who passed away in January.

“The time he spent going to see her, relaying information to her colleagues, and participating in activities to make her smile (e.g., caroling) was really remarkable,” the nominator wrote.

Another nominator wrote they are “most appreciative of his guardian voice — I always know that I can count on him to ‘guard, protect and defend’ Marquette, especially in difficult times.”

Such examples are found throughout more than a dozen nominations Frieder received for this award.

Frieder is regularly cited in local and national news stories about the British Royal Family, a topic on which he is a sought-after expert. He earned a bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, in history from Marquette in 1995 and a master’s degree in history from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1998.

The Excellence in University Service Awards recognize staff members for their contributions to the essential work of Marquette at the highest level of excellence. Candidates are nominated based on meritorious service that is above and beyond the duties normally assigned to their positions.
