Marquette adjunct psychology professor receives Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence

June 29, 2021

Dr. Kim NordenMILWAUKEE — Dr. Kimberly Norden, adjunct assistant professor of psychology in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences at Marquette University, is the recipient of a 2021 John P. Raynor, S.J. Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence.

Marquette's Teaching Excellence Awards are the highest honor bestowed upon university faculty members. Recipients are nominated by colleagues and students for demonstrating excellence as teacher-scholars. The awards are supported by grants from the Robert and Mary Gettel Fund, the Stearns Foundation, and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence G. Haggerty.

“I am honored and humbled to receive this award, given the incredibly stressful year we all just survived. Teaching all of my classes online for the past two semesters has made me so much more appreciative of engaging with students in person,” Norden said. “I'm really looking forward to returning to in-person classes in the fall! I'm also grateful to receive this award as an adjunct professor; I'm hopeful that more non-tenure track professors at MU will be recognized for their commitment to excellent teaching in the future.”

Norden began teaching at Marquette in 1997. Over that time, she has instructed more than 13,000 students across 160 sections of nine different courses, nearly 40 of which were taught over summers and J-sessions.

Norden takes great pride in her belief that to be an effective teacher, lessons must be engaging, organized with clear expectations and relevant to the lives of students.

Each semester, Norden receives raving course evaluations from students, proving herself as a standout professor.

One nominator wrote, “Dr. Kimberly Norden was the most influential professor I had in all of college, connecting her teachings to real-life issues that touch the lives of each student that comes through her classroom.”

Another nominator wrote, “Dr. Norden embodies a commitment to student growth, development and welfare. She is one of the most dedicated and thoughtful instructors in our department.”

A co-worker also wrote, “On top of everything, Dr. Norden is a great colleague. She is generous not just to students but to other faculty, and by her example she inspires everyone in the department to teach better.”
