MILWAUKEE — Marquette University will host a “story exchange” facilitated by the Narrative 4 student chapter as part of the Symposium on Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice on Friday, April 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W Wisconsin Ave.
The story exchange model pairs individuals to share stories that in some way define them. Each participant is then responsible for telling their partner’s story in the first person. Narrative 4’s Marquette student chapter and other certified Narrative 4 facilitators will lead the exercise by providing more context, modeling the story exchange, helping participants build valuable active listening skills and guiding them through reflection.
Participant registration is open through Wednesday, March 30. Media interested in attending open parts of the symposium should contact Kevin Conway, associate director of university communication, at email@example.com.
Narrative 4 is a global network of educators, students and artists who use art and storytelling to build empathy between students while equipping them to improve their communities and the world. Using its core methodology, the story exchange, Narrative 4 helps students understand that their voices, stories, actions and lives matter, and that they have the power to change, rebuild and revolutionize systems.
The Symposium on Diversity, Inclusion and Social Justice is hosted by the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, in collaboration with the University Committee on Equity and Inclusion. Launched in 2019, this symposium serves as an “institutional examen” – a time to look inwardly at who we are and who we are called to be. In a dialogic process, participants explore discrimination at the intersections of race, gender and sexuality, discuss how we are working to address these issues, and offer a vision for the future of equity and inclusion at Marquette.
