Optometrists diagnose, treat, prescribe medications, perform certain surgical procedures, provide vision therapy and assist patients with contact lenses and glasses. After graduation from Marquette University, students who are accepted to optometry school then complete four years of optometric education. A residency after optometry school is not required to practice, but is an option if students want to pursue one.
In addition to having strong academics, experiences and letters of recommendation, successful applicants to optometry programs typically demonstrate a clear understanding of optometry as a career. For more information on optometry schools, visit www.opted.org.
