Program Overview

Air Force ROTC is divided into two courses of study - General Military Course (Freshman/Sophomores) and Professional Officer Course (Juniors/Seniors), with a 2-week summer Field Training leadership experience between your GMC and POC years. Leadership development is emphasized throughout the program. Additional, off-site training opportunities are also available.

Note: It is possible to complete an accelerated version of the ROTC program if you did not begin as a first-year student, but you must be in the program for at least three years unless you are pursuing a law degree.

General Military Course

The first and second-year educational program in Air Force Aerospace Studies consists of a series of one-hour courses designed to give students basic information on the role of the U.S. Air Force in the defense of the free world. All required textbooks and uniforms are provided free.

Aerospace Studies 100 Program - for Freshmen Students

  • Heritage and Values of the United States Air Force AFAS 1011/AFAS 1012
    • Designed to introduce students to the United States Air Force and provide an overview of the basic characteristics, missions and organization of the Air Force. Includes an introduction to communication skills.
  • Leadership Laboratory AFAS 1051, taken each semester

Aerospace Studies 200 Program - for Sophomore Students

  • Team and Leadership Fundamentals AFAS 2021/AFAS 2022
    • Features topics on Air Force heritage and leaders; introduction to air and space power through examination of distinctive capabilities and functions; and continued application of communication skills. Instills an appreciation of the development and employment of air and space power and to motivate sophomore students to transition from AFROTC cadet to Air Force ROTC officer candidate.

Field Training Overview

During the summer between your Sophomore and Junior year of college, you will participate in a 2-week Field Training Leadership Exercise. If you intend to enter the Professional Officer Course (POC), you must successfully complete Field Training. Field training offers you the opportunity to develop your skills as both a leader and team member. Following successful completion of Field Training, cadets, even those not on scholarship, receive a nontaxable subsistence allowance of $450 per month during their junior academic year and $500 per month during their senior year.

Aerospace Studies 300 Program - for Juniors

  • Leading People and Effective Communication AFAS 3131/3132
    • Study of leadership and quality management fundamentals, professional knowledge, leadership ethics and communicative skills required of an Air Force officer. Case studies are used to examine Air Force leadership and management situations as a means of demonstrating and exercising practical application of the concepts being studied.
  • Leadership Laboratory AFAS 1051, taken each semester

Aerospace Studies 400 Program - for Seniors

  • National Security Affairs/Preparation for Active Duty AFAS 4141/4142
    • Examines the national security policy process, regional studies, and formulation of the American defense policy, strategy and joint doctrine. Special topics of interest focus on the military as a profession; US Air Force functions, competencies and doctrine; officership; the military justice system; civilian control of the military; preparation for Air Force active duty; and current issues affecting military professionalism. Within this structure, continued emphasis is given to the refinement of communication skills.
