Overview of FACHEX and Tuition Exchange Programs

FACHEX and TE are undergraduate tuition remission options that allow employees who have a tuition remission benefit for their children at their home institution to apply to receive consideration for the same benefit at participating colleges and universities, should the student meet the hosting institution's requirements for FACHEX and TE applicants, and there is space available. It is important to realize that FACHEX and TE awards tend to be extremely limited in number and highly competitive in terms of selectivity. Therefore, there are NO guarantees to the children of any given faculty or staff member that they will be able to utilize the FACHEX or TE benefit at the institution of their choice.

What is FACHEX?

Established by the Conference of Academic Vice Presidents of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) in 1971, FACHEX is an acronym for Faculty and Staff Children Exchange. Twenty-six Jesuit universities participate in the FACHEX program. (Georgetown University is the only U.S. AJCU school not participating.)

What is Tuition Exchange?

Tuition Exchange is a reciprocal scholarship opportunity for the child dependents of eligible faculty and staff at all Tuition Exchange member schools. Membership currently includes more than 660 institutions, ranging in size from 250 to 50,000 students and representing 47 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and several other countries.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements are determined by the home institution. The general principle is, if the home institution grants a tuition remission benefit to the child of a faculty or staff member, then the child is eligible to apply for a possible FACHEX or TE award at the participating institution(s) of their choice, by being certified as FACHEX/TE eligible by their home institution. Each institution sets their own rules about how students are selected for a FACHEX/TE award, and it is the student's responsibility to research what is required and follow any applicable deadlines/policies. Participating schools use academic achievement as one of several determining factors in FACHEX/TE award selection, and most will only consider incoming first-year applicants. FACHEX/TE awards are NOT transferrable between participating institutions.

At Marquette University, an employee must have completed at least five years of continuous full-time regular service to be considered eligible to apply for FACHEX/TE at other participating institutions. Please refer to UPP 4-09: Tuition Benefit Programs for dependent tuition benefit eligibility guidelines.

Tuition Exchange

  • if granted, covers 4 years of continuous full-time undergraduate study during the traditional fall and spring semesters. It is not available for part-time study, graduate study, summer study, nor individual course remuneration.
  • if granted, covers either full tuition or a set amount for 2025-2026 of $43,000. The decision to use full tuition or the set amount is made individually by each participating institution. Any additional expenses incurred by the student such as room, board, university fees, travel related expenses, or books are the sole responsibility of the student and/or the student's family, unless otherwise determined by the specific institution.

Availability

Each participating institution determines the number of FACHEX/TE awards it will grant to incoming students each year, as well as the selection procedure at that institution. Generally, these positions are extremely limited in number, hence highly competitive. As stated above, there are no guarantees to the children of any given faculty or staff member that they will be able to utilize the FACHEX/TE benefit at the institution of their choice. As both FACHEX and TE are exchange programs, participating institutions are required to maintain a balance of imported and exported students, which results in the number of awards available changing from year to year.

Note:

  • The home institution is the institution where the eligible family member is employed; students are exported from the home institution.
  • The host institution is the institution where the dependent wishes to attend; students are imported to the host institution.
