What to expect when you call

The receptionist will help connect you with a counselor for a phone consultation to discuss treatment needs.  These consultations are approximately 20-30 minutes.  Please be ready with your student identification number.

During your phone consultation, a counselor will gather contact information, as well as discuss treatment needs and plan, including eligibility for short-term individual counseling services via secure videoconferencing.

In following with best practices when providing mental health services virtually, at the beginning of every contact, you will verify your current location, a back up phone number will be verified and a review of the emergency plan including an emergency contact number will be discussed.

Everything you say at the Counseling Center is held in confidence, meaning the provider cannot discuss it with other people. The counselor can only break confidentiality if you indicate you are very likely to hurt yourself or someone else. The counselor also may need to break confidentiality in the rare event that a judge orders the records to be opened as part of a legal proceeding or if the government suspects you of terrorism. If you report that a child you know of is being abused or neglected you will likely work with the counselor and outside agencies to ensure that person is safe. If you have any questions or concerns about confidentiality, please discuss them with your counselor.

The Counseling Center is open and available for phone consultation from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on weekdays.  The Counseling Center is closed on weekends. If you are in crisis during normal business hours but do not have scheduled appointment, please call the Counseling Center at 414-288-7172. If you are in crisis (i.e. having suicidal or homicidal thoughts or having just experienced a trauma) outside of our normal business hours, contact the after-hours counselor through the Marquette University Policy Department at 414-288-6800. If you are experiencing a life threatening crisis off campus -contact 911 or go to the nearest ER.
