Sasha Razin, Spring 2024 Gilman Scholarship Recipient

How did you hear about the Gilman scholarship?

Through my advisor, Millie Lor. She was extremely helpful in my process of applying, answering any questions I had along the way.

How did you find the application process for the Gilman scholarship? If needed, were there resources on-campus that you reached out to for assistance/guidance?

Overall, my process was extremely positive. I enjoyed writing the essays included in the application. They allowed me to reflect on how studying abroad will impact me for the rest of my life. Additionally the application process was smooth, and I do not have any complaints.

I found the application through my study abroad advisor, Millie Lor. During our first meeting I mentioned that I was concerned that I would not be able to go abroad because of my family’s financial status and Millie guided me to apply for the Gilman Scholarship. Shortly after, I researched the scholarship and decided to apply.

What advice/recommendation do you have for students that are looking at applying for the Gilman scholarship?

If you’re eligible you should apply! Take advantage of the opportunity. It may take a little bit of work but it’s definitely worth it! If you put in the effort, it will pay off and you can have once in a lifetime experiences. You can grow and learn so much from studying abroad and applying to the Gilman Scholarship will allow you to realize that further!

What will you be using the funds for? In other words, how will the funds affect you positively?

I will use them to pay for my tuition for this semester abroad to help relieve financial burden on my family. I come from a family of immigrants and Ukrainian refugees, so my family devotes a large amount of money and time to keeping them safe, on top of sending me to college. I’m extremely thankful to have received this scholarship so I can confidently continue my education in Florence, Italy.
