Where Will I Live?

Where and how you live abroad will greatly influence your overall study abroad experience, and it is important to keep your goals and living styles in mind when selecting an environment.

Flexibility is also key — your experience will almost certainly be different from your expectations in some ways, and living in a community with members of other cultures can be challenging. But doing so will also be one of the most rewarding and valuable elements of your study abroad experience, and you will make friendships that last for years to come.

Exploring your housing options

Some study abroad programs arrange housing for you, while other programs provide a list of resources for you to find housing independently. You may find that you are presented with only one option or be able to choose from various options such as:

Host family

This is an excellent choice if you are looking to improve your language skills or be immersed in a culture. Students in homestays often experience more of the day-to-day activities of the host country, and many stay in touch with their host families after they leave.

Residence hall

Living in a university residence hall allows you to interact with students from the host institution and, sometimes, other international students. It's a highly social living arrangement and often allows for networking with students from around the world.

Apartment living may be on or off campus. This is a good option for highly independent students, especially those with some prior international experience, because they may need to take care of some of the details of life abroad that would otherwise be covered by a residence hall (paying bills, finding an apartment, etc.).

Meal options

Meal options will also vary by program. Some programs include the cost of one or more meals per day; others do not. Residence halls and host families often, though not always, include meals, but apartments generally leave this to the student.
