2023 Marquette Campus BioBlitz

A Bioblitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a set period of time.

To kick off Campus Sustainability Month, Marquette Sustainability, Biological Undergraduate Society, and the Sustainable Marquette Employee Resource Group are co-hosting a week-long Bioblitz on campus from Tuesday September 26th until Tuesday October 3rd at noon! This week-long event will have a kick-off event and a wrap-up event where students can learn about the vast array of species present on Marquette University’s campus, how to use iNaturalist, and how to identify these species themselves. During the week there will be guided walks where participants will be using the iNaturalist app, as well as different guides to identify and log species.

Participants who make over 10 observations will entered into a drawing to win a gift card to a Milwaukee business or organization.

Important Events
BioBlitz Kickoff-Tuesday, September 26th from 4-6pm; under the Raynor Memorial bridge

• Participants will learn more about the BioBlitz, how to use the different species guide and how to log their findings in iNaturalist.
• If you cannot make it to the kick-off event, you can still particpate. See information at the bottom of the page.

BioBlitz Wrap-Up-Tuesday, October 3rd from 4-6pm; under the Raynor Memorial bridge

• The event will highlight the species found, most observations, give participants an opportunity to share what the experience was like for them, and announce winners of the raffle.

Can’t Make It?If you can’t make it to any of our events, you can still participate!

1. Download the iNaturalist app, or make an account online, and join our project using the link: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/marquette-university-2023-bioblitz
2. Join our project, all observations will automatically be uploaded to the project as long as they are located on campus and were observed from 9/26-10/3. See the iNaturalist guide for more information on joining our project.
3. Take pictures or note down your observations to upload them to iNaturalist. You can take pictures of different species of plants, animals, or insects. If you have a picture, the iNaturalist app can help you identify what species you observed! You do not have to be an expert, even observing something as just a bee or just a butterfly is enough to upload the data.
