If you’re a student who would like to receive help with public speaking an upcoming individual or group presentation, you have a great resource: The MIC Speakers Lab. One of the Diederich College of Communication’s newer initiatives, The MIC is located in Johnston Hall 508 and led by Communication Studies Instructor Tracey Sturgal.
At the MIC, you can receive help in all aspects of presentation development from brainstorming ideas and organizing content to practicing effective delivery and creating visuals. In addition, trained student experts will serve as your coaches, teaching you breathing techniques, positive self talk and visualization exercises to help you stay calm and centered during your speech. You can also receive feedback on your visual aids like PowerPoint presentations, handouts, charts and visualizations.
The student experts at The MIC have taken either the Professional Communication or the Business Communication course and receive ongoing training. Professor Sturgal also works to create a safe environment for all students who come to The MIC for help. Telling students to aim for excellence rather than perfection, she encourages her student experts to “lead with love.”
To receive feedback and practice your individual or group presentation during the Fall 2020 semester, all sessions will be held virtually. You can schedule your appointment online today. We look forward to meeting you soon.
