The Lovell Scholars Program
Marquette’s Lovell Scholars Program honors the legacy of Michael R. Lovell, the 24th President of Marquette University, by attracting and supporting students from across the nation with a record of the highest academic achievement and demonstrated leadership and service. Lovell Scholars are humble, open-minded, creative thinkers who aim to dedicate their lives to the common good. The Lovell Scholarship offers full tuition plus housing and fees to four incoming students per year, in any undergraduate college at Marquette, for a total cohort of sixteen. In accordance with the value Jesuit education places on knowledge in action, Scholars expand their academic horizons beyond the classroom, building their skills in leadership and collaborative problem-solving as they engage in research, discovery, and service for the benefit of others.
The Program Experience
Embedded within the Honors Program, the Lovell Scholars Program curriculum focuses on inquiry, service, purpose, and action.

- As soon as they arrive on campus, Scholars are paired with faculty mentors with whom they engage in co-curricular, experiential learning aimed at developing their natural curiosity and independence – most commonly in research or community-engaged projects. Scholars meet regularly with their mentors throughout each semester to immerse themselves in their disciplines and advance their professional development. In the second year Scholars focus on building their service experience. Together, their service and academic experiences inform the development of an independent culminating project that they design and complete during their final two years in the program.
- Scholars have the benefits of a small, supportive, multidisciplinary cohort, annual seminars, and dedicated program advising to help them identify and apply for internal and external opportunities and postgraduate prestigious fellowships.
- All Lovell Scholars are automatically admitted to the University Honors Program and are eligible for guaranteed Honors summer research or creative project fellowships and Honors study-abroad awards.
Application Process
All students admitted to Marquette through the Early Action admissions process are eligible to apply to the Lovell Scholars Program.
The initial application consists of two short video essays. Essay prompts will be shared at the time of application. Finalists will be invited to campus for interviews in April.
“When you give of yourself to help others, whether it be through your time, your talents, or your resources, a miracle happens. And that miracle is you get back more than you gave.” – President Michael R. Lovell
