Online Teaching Opportunities for Participating Faculty

Recommendations for Expanding Access to Online Teaching Opportunities for Participating Faculty

This proposal addresses the Participating Faculty Task Force Report recommendation to expand access to online teaching opportunities for participating faculty especially during the summer and J-Session. Benefits of expanded teaching options for Participating Faculty potentially include: enhanced educational opportunities for students, expanded portfolio of courses available to participating faculty, and increased flexibility to participating faculty who have other employment. Additionally, participating faculty can contribute to and be compensated for helping to develop and implement online curricula in high demand areas thereby better meeting the needs of our students.

To support expanding access to teaching opportunities the Participating Faculty Task Force recommends the following:

  • All full-time teaching faculty (regular and participating) should be alerted to and have the opportunity to express interest in online teaching assignments within their respective department or college.
  • Teaching assignments should be made based on course demand as well as instructor interest, teaching effectiveness, subject expertise, and credentials.
  • Department / college administrators should consider a compensation structure across their unit that equitably compensates participating faculty for J-Session and Summer Session courses.
