Join our staff

The Ott Memorial Writing Center is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students who go through extensive training and a competitive selection process. Our tutors are not only strong writers; they are also empathetic listeners and creative problem solvers. Our reception staff are multi-taskers who can work independently and as part of a small team to keep the day-to-day operations of the Ott Memorial Writing Center running smoothly.

Undergraduate Tutors: The application process for new tutors is now open.

  • We seek tutors from a wide variety of disciplines. Our staff includes majors in Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, English, French, History, International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, and Spanish.
  • There are lots of great reasons to become a tutor. Learn about some of them here.
  • All undergraduate tutors must first take English 4230: Writing Center Theory, Research, and Practice. The course is offered each spring.
  • INFORMATION SESSIONS, which allow you to meet current tutors and learn more about the benefits of working in the writing center, will be held on
    • TH Oct 11th, 6-7:15pm
    • T Oct 23, 6-7:15pm
    • W Oct 24, 6-7:15pm
  • All sessions will be held in the room across from the Ott Memorial Writing Center, in 245 Raynor Memorial Library.

Reception Staff

  • Our reception staff is composed of both undergraduate and graduate students from a wide variety of disciplines. We are not hiring at this time.

Graduate Tutors

  • Our graduate student tutors are usually drawn from the English Department, thanks to the generous financial support of the Department of English.
  • If you are a graduate student in English interested in working in the Ott Memorial Writing Center, please contact the Director during the spring semester, before request forms are due to the Director of FYE.
  • If you are a graduate student from a department other than English who is interested in working in the Ott Memorial Writing Center, please feel free to contact the Director to learn the latest information on whether we are able to hire outside of English.
