Join our staff

The Ott Memorial Writing Center is staffed by undergraduate and graduate students who go through a competitive selection process and extensive training. Our tutors are not only strong writers; they are also empathetic listeners and creative problem solvers. Our reception staff are multi-taskers who can work independently and as part of a small team to keep the day-to-day operations of the Ott Memorial Writing Center running smoothly.

Undergraduate Tutors

  • Our staff includes majors in Biological Sciences, Education, Engineering, English, French, History, International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, Supply Chain, and Spanish.
  • There are lots of great reasons to become a tutor. Learn about some of them here.
  • First year students through seniors can apply.
  • We hire on an annual basis each fall. To start, we collect nominations and self-nominations in early October, when we also hold information sessions, so prospective students can learn more. We then conduct 20-minute interviews in late October and early November. Our selection process concludes in time for Spring registration so that everyone who is selected can enroll in English 4230: Writing Center Theory, Research, and Practice. This 4-unit course is a prerequisite for undergraduate tutors and fulfills the ESSV 2 requirement.
