Arabic

Arab and Muslim Women's Research and Resource Institute (AMWRRI) Digital Archive, Oral History Project Researcher.

Open to undergraduate and graduate students nationwide. Highly competitive.

AMWRRI’s ongoing Oral History Project highlights the diversity of Arab and Muslim communities in the U.S. through personal interviews, survey data, and literature searches. The experiences of Arab and Muslim Americans, particularly women, are not often documented, traced, and known, making it difficult to identify issues of concern within the community. The Oral History Project is multifaceted, and there are opportunities for students to choose their area of interest when contributing to AMWRRI's research.

Major project topics have included immigration and identity, perceptions of and resources for people living with physical and mental disabilities, the history and importance of cultural clothing in different societies, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on American Muslims across the U.S. AMWRRI approaches oral history from various disciplines and perspectives including health, culture, theology, history, and gender. To achieve our mission, AMWRRI strives to promote open dialogue and increase understanding of the perceptions and treatment of disability in Muslim communities. Researchers will work with community partners and interview Muslim community members, leaders, healthcare providers, and caregivers to support and promote AMWRRI’s ongoing research.

Detailed Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborate with team members to generate interview questions.
  • Conduct literature reviews on relevant topics.
  • Collect contact information for potential interviewees.
  • Assist with scheduling in-person and/or remote interviews over Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
  • Conduct oral interviews with community members.
  • Transcribe oral interviews to be included in AMWRRI’s digital archive.
  • Work with team members and research coordinator to develop and disseminate multimedia materials for AMWRRI’s archive and website (e.g., social media posts, newsletters, audio files).
  • Maintain AMWRRI's Website and social media pages with new stories and contribute to communications campaigns to spark engagement with our audience.
  • Research influential Muslim women throughout history and contribute articles to AMWRRI’s website as well as The Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies.
