Strategic Plan 2031

STUDENT SUCCESS 

Librarians and library staff help students feel more confident with the research process and in their role as scholars/researchers. As Marquette mobilizes student success and retention efforts, the library is a key player in engaging students through student-centered services and spaces, programming, and resources.  

Transform library instruction to encompass the core of information-related literacies—including data, media, and artificial intelligence (AI)—that are now critical for work and life. 

• Integrate instruction for the core literacies across the Marquette Core Curriculum.  

• Produce lesson plans and learning objects that teach students to critically evaluate and use AI. 

• Implement a curriculum mapping scheme to inform student learning outcomes for library workshops. 

Invest in student-centered programming, outreach, and partnerships to increase engagement and enrich the Marquette experience beyond the classroom.  

• Create a program for developing transferable workplace skills and cocurricular learning opportunities for student employees.  

• Increase library programs that feature student-led outreach.  

• Collaborate with other academic and co-curricular units on campus to increase opportunities for student experiential learning in the library. 

Advance affordable education for students.   

• Cultivate partnership opportunities with campus stakeholders to develop and implement open educational resource initiatives. 

• Identify opportunities to expand the library’s borrowable course materials and technology needed for learning. 

RESEARCH EXCELLENCE

Raynor Library powers Marquette University research, from exploration to dissemination, and plays an essential role in supporting Marquette’s teacher-scholars and advancing the public good.  

Integrate the library into the campus research life cycle to improve research productivity and impact. 

• Develop and promote an integrated portfolio of research services for faculty that connect related offerings within the library as well as across the campus. 

• Routinely assess and adapt collection strategies, expertise, and services to keep pace with the evolving research landscape. 

• Increase efforts to disseminate and showcase Marquette faculty research and data and to track their impact. 

Leverage the library’s expertise to help the Marquette community navigate the ever-evolving technologies that impact research. 

• Initiate library programs and campus partnerships to facilitate ethical and effective use of AI in Marquette research.  

• Offer instruction in using AI tools relevant to research, writing, and publishing. 

Adopt innovative collections strategies that balance the evolving needs of Marquette’s research and academic programs with budgetary sustainability.  

• Explore consortia partnerships and new models of shared ownership and licensing to maximize resource dollars and benefit from cooperative relationships. 

• Optimize new systems to make data-driven decisions around collections, renewals, and new acquisitions. 

• Implement a long-term, sustainable plan for digital preservation.

Enhance resources, services, and spaces to reflect and welcome all cultures, backgrounds, disciplines, and modes of learning. 

• Deepen collaborations with campus academic support services to improve handoffs, make pathways to help clearer, and maximize the positive impact of these services on student success  

• Increase the comfort and inclusivity of physical and digital spaces to accommodate the unique needs, expectations, interests, and perspectives of library users.   

• Review and update collections and collections metadata to ensure broad representation of perspectives.  

• Maximize access to and awareness of unique library collections that challenge assumptions and enhance learning.  

Undertake initiatives that deepen library employees’ sense of belonging and engagement.  

• Emphasize collaboration, flexibility, and evidence-based decision-making to enhance organizational excellence and employee satisfaction.  

• Develop an onboarding experience that ensures the success of new employees.
