Caroline R.

Tutor, Ott Memorial Writing Center

Tutoring Expertise and Passion

My name is Caroline Roe, this is my third semester working in the writing center. I have experience working with white papers, close readings, and rhetorical analysis assignments. I have tutored over the Ott's online conference forum as well as in-person meetings. While my majors are quite focused on math and technology, I love using my creative side to help writers brainstorm ideas for their projects.

Citation Experience

I am proficient in APA citation.

Statement of Tutoring Philosophy

As a student writer myself, I am more than familiar with the stress and anxiety that is often present when crafting writing assignments. We all struggle with transposing our thoughts into words on a page, whether it be for a rhetorical analysis or a personal statement. I became a tutor at the Ott because I want to form meaningful and purposeful relationships with those of us in Marquette’s writing community. If there is one thing I have learned in my extensive training for this role, it is that there is a place for everyone in the writing center. Whether your interests lie in the arts or engineering or business, we are all engaging in discourse as writers. As a tutor it is my purpose to use my training and knowledge to best support writer’s ideas, while offering constructive feedback and an alternative perspective. My conferences are completely structured around the needs and concerns of the writer. Together, I hope to work through pieces in a collaborative manner- where both tutor and tutee are freely voicing concerns, opinions and thoughts throughout. While I am here to teach, I am also here to learn. I want to learn about you, your writing style, your assignment topic, and anything else that will help me to best provide comfort and support in the writing center. We are here for you!

Goals

  1. I will use my best effort to reach out to my fellow tutors for advice and strategy suggestions when in need. This goal requires me to be proactive with my free time in the Ott by not hesitating to ask questions to my peers.

  2. I will be proactive with my records by making sure that each report is written and submitted by the end of my shift. I will ensure that this is completed by setting a reminder on my phone at the end of each shift.

  3. I will try my hardest to have one returning writer by fostering a trusting and meaningful relationship with a student. I will encourage their return by giving them my business card and expressing a genuine interest in their work.
