Choosing a Discovery Theme

Requesting a course substitution

For the rationale required for a substitution request, students should refer to the following descriptions.

For Discovery tier substitution requests, please explain how the course you are requesting to satisfy the requirement addressed the themes laid out in the description of your Discovery theme.

For ESSV1 substitution requests, please explain how the course you are requesting to satisfy the requirement addressed the goals of Engaging Social Systems and Values:

The ESSV Foundations course fosters proficiencies, through a range of disciplinary bases, that help students recognize the powerful social structures that shape the world around them and facilitate privilege for some and limit opportunities for others. The ESSV Foundations course helps students recognize their own positions in social systems and invites them to consider how they can contribute to the creation of social systems that promote the full flourishing of all people and of each person in pursuit of the common good.

For ESSV2 substitution requests, please explain how the course you are requesting to satisfy the requirement addressed the goals of Engaging Social Systems and Values:

The goal of the ESSV2 requirement is to enable students to process their experiences with social systems and diverse values structures in a more reflective, critically aware fashion. Courses fulfilling the ESSV2 requirement should therefore help our students discern the powerful influence that social structures—especially those surrounding race, class, and gender—exert on the world around them and equip them to contribute to the development of social systems that promote the full flourishing of all people and of each person in pursuit of the common good. The ESSV2 courses are designed to help students progress further toward mastery of the content and skills encountered in the Foundations Tier ESSV course.

Please note that we require courses satisfying the WRIT requirement to be taken at Marquette and make exceptions only in exigent circumstances.
