Workshop and Sharing Session 1

Festival of Failures, hosted by Susan Haarmon, Loyola University- Chicago, Jorion Tucker, Loyola University- Chicago, and Eddie Godina, Marquette University.

The Festival of Failures invites our network of Community Engaged Learning Professionals to come together in a space where we can share and learn from our “failures” in community-based work. This session is built on the idea that in our everyday work and experience in community engagement & higher education, there are some things that can be done better, experiences that can be learned from, and stories that can be shared. All too often we may feel the pressure to only talk about what’s going well rather than acknowledge the complexity of our work and how we learned from difficult situations.  The session will provide time for small group and personal reflection, and we encourage all participants to come ready to talk about something in their work they wish had turned out differently. Let’s celebrate learning from the bumps in the road and missteps!

Panel and Workshop Session II

Option 1: Third Generation Community Engagement Professionals Panel

This panel will feature new professionals to the community engagement field (new to the field in the past 3-5 years). New professionals bring energy, ideas, a critical eye, and questions about community engagement that are integral to our learning and understanding of the practice. Panelists will be provided questions to consider, as well as participate in a larger conversation with the audience about where our field has been and where we may be going.

Facilitator by: Patrick Green

Panelists:

    • Eddie Godina, M.A., Assistant Director of Service Learning, Marquette University
    • Sarah Marr, Assistant Director of Community Engaged Learning, Gonzaga University
    • Jorion Tucker, M.A., Community Partnerships Coordinator, Loyola University Chicago

Option 2: Sharing and Celebrating Recent Graduate-Level Scholarship Panel

This panel will feature AJCU CELP professionals who have recently defended a master's thesis or a doctoral dissertation. Our network wants to hear about your scholarship and congratulate academic wins! Panelists will have the opportunity to share about their recent work and take questions from the audience, as well as take part in a conversation about the role of the post-graduate degree in the community engagement field.

Panelists:

    • Susan Haarman, Ph.D., Associate Director of the Center for Engaged Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship, Loyola University Chicago
    • Isabelle Jenkins, Ph.D., Director of the Donelan Office of Community-Based Learning, College of the Holy Cross

Workshops and Sharing Session III

Option 1: Publication and Scholarship, hosted by Patrick Green and Cynthia Stewart, Loyola University Chicago

Publication and scholarship opportunities can allow you to slow down, reflect on your practice, and articulate ideas drawing from your knowledge, experiences, and wisdom. Applying the lens of a practitioner scholar can allow you to leverage your community-engaged learning practices and turn them into scholarly publications. In this session, we will discuss opportunities for reflective writing, collaborative writing, and scholarly work. The session will commence with an ideation and feedback session on writing/scholarly project ideas.

Option 2: Faculty Development, hosted by Isabelle Jenkins, College of the Holy Cross and Melissa Quan, Fairfield University

This workshop will be a space for folks to hear from each other about ideas for faculty development regarding service-learning and community engaged scholarship. We'll hear from our colleagues about a few examples/models for professional development, and then we'll engage in discussion about successes and challenges regarding faculty development. Participants are encouraged to bring a theme/question/model regarding faculty professional development to "workshop." Participants will hopefully leave this workshop with ideas and tools regarding putting on meaningful and engaging faculty professional development at their institutions.
