Assistant Professor
Theology Department (Historical Theology)
Austin Foley Holmes (Ph.D., Boston College, 2024) is a scholar of Christianity in Late Antiquity, with a specialization in Greek and Latin Patristics. He is completing a first monograph provisionally entitled Contemplative Life and Political Life in Christian Late Antiquity, a study of the Christian reception of the philosophical theme of the ideal bios ("way of life") up to the fifth century. His other projects include translating Ambrose of Milan's commentaries on the Psalms (for the Ancient Christian Writers series) and writing a major history of how Christians have imagined the perfect society in the wake of Plato's Republic and Laws, beginning with Origen's glowing portrait of the ancient Jewish state in his Contra Celsum.
