Health Sciences Professional Programs

In addition to its undergraduate offerings, the College of Health Sciences offers a number of health professional programs, including doctoral programs in physical therapy, occupational therapy, neuroscience, and exercise and rehabilitation science; master's programs in physician assistant studies, speech language pathology, athletic training, exercise and rehabilitation science, and sports and exercise analytics; and a certificate program in clinical laboratory sciences.

Doctor of Occupational Therapy

The Doctor of Occupational Therapy in the College of Health Sciences is the first entry-level doctoral program of its kind in Wisconsin. The three-year (nine-semester) professional course of study is designed to educate future leaders of a collaborative and culturally responsive workforce.

Doctor of Physical Therapy

The Doctor of Physical Therapy program is Marquette's highest-ranked professional program, ranked 13th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

100 percent of DPT graduates seeking to work in physical therapy achieve employment, and the program has 500 national clinical training sites and features award-winning faculty and students who have earned 60 national awards from the American Physical Therapy Association since 1990.

The direct-admit program means students can earn their undergraduate and DPT degrees in six years. The Physical Therapy Department also houses the Marquette Physical Therapy Clinic and the Neuro Recovery Clinic – the only clinic of its kind in Wisconsin – offering students opportunities for on-site clinical instruction.

Master of Physician Assistant Studies

The Physician Assistant Studies program — ranked 26th in the country by U.S. News & World Report — is one of Marquette's most sought-after degree programs.

Physician Assistant Studies program students have a 100 percent pass rate on the national board certification exam and a 100 percent job placement rate after graduation.

Students also participate in hospital and clinical rotations in emergency medicine, family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery and other specialty disciplines at clinical sites throughout the country.

The program recently expanded to a class size of 75, and the accelerated five-year program means students can graduate in five years with a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

Master of Athletic Training

The Master of Athletic Training program is one of the most selective programs at Marquette.

The program offers both a five-year accelerated degree – where students can apply for direct admission and earn an undergraduate degree in exercise science and a Master of Athletic Training – and a two-year professional program for those who have already completed an undergraduate degree.

Marquette athletic trainers work with professional and collegiate sports teams around the world, and students have hands-on instructional opportunities within Marquette's Division I athletics programs. Students also have a 100 percent pass rate on the national certification exam.

Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science

The Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science offers students a number of advantages including guaranteed clinical placement in its six-month clinical internship, and nearly 100 percent of graduates are employed in the field before graduation.

The two-year professional certificate program is open to students with completed undergraduate degrees in a science-related major from a regionally accredited four-year U.S. college or university.

Graduate School Programs

Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology

The Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology, founded more than 90 years ago at Marquette, is ranked 55th in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

Students in the program have a 100 percent pass rate on the national certification exam and a 100 percent job placement rate.

The program also offers a bilingual English-Spanish specialization, and has an on-site Speech and Hearing Clinic as well as an internationally recognized Intensive Aphasia Program, all of which offer opportunities for hands-on clinical instruction.

Ph.D. in Neuroscience

The Ph.D. program in Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary research program designed to prepare students for doctoral level interdisciplinary career opportunities in the growing arena of neuroscience research and industry.

The program offers three specialization areas: Cellular and Molecular Neuroscience; Computational, Neurorehabilitation and Neuroimaging Neuroscience; and Behavioral and Cognitive Neuroscience.

Master's and Ph.D. in Exercise and Rehabilitation Science

The master's and Ph.D. clinical research program in Exercise and Rehabilitation Science, housed in the College of Health Sciences' highly ranked Physical Therapy Department, is part of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeastern Wisconsin, which is funded by the National Institutes of Health.

This program provides training in translational research with access to CTSI partner institutions for collaborative research opportunities and community projects throughout Milwaukee. The clinical research in this program has a unique emphasis in rehabilitation disciplines, including biomechanics, neuroscience, motor control, exercise physiology and sports medicine.

Graduates of our master’s program have pursued post-baccalaureate clinical programs including medical school and physical therapy programs as well as direct employment in exercise physiology-related fields. Our Ph.D. students have secured competitive post-doctoral fellowships and academic faculty positions.

Master of Science in Sports and Exercise Analytics

The new Master of Science in Sports and Exercise Analytics is a two-year program that intersects physiology and biomechanics with data science to address specific questions regarding elite athletic, sports, exercise and human performance. The program also offers a part-time and hybrid online option.

Students have the opportunity to work with athletes in Marquette's Division I athletics programs for on-site instruction and analytics research.
