The Case for Open Immigration

The current U.S. immigration policy of closed borders and mass deportation violates human rights and moral principles foundational to liberal democracy. Undocumented immigrants’ vulnerability to exploitation as a result of the threat of deportation represents a systemic denial of basic rights, and it can be argued that national boundaries are morally arbitrary and cannot justify exclusion, challenging assumptions of national sovereignty and border control.  A policy of open immigration grounded in compassion, equality, and Catholic Social Teaching better serves the Common Good, promoting humane reform that affirms migrants’ inherent dignity and right to seek a decent life across borders.
