Dr. Terrie Garcia, coordinator for Project BEYOND-2 in the College of Nursing, is one of two recipients of the 2021 Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award.

The award recognizes one faculty member and one staff member who demonstrate exemplary leadership and manifest the ideals of diversity, equity and inclusion into practical action.

“While I don’t do my job to get awards or praise, at the same time, it is important that diversity and inclusion is made a priority at all levels of higher education,” Terrie says. “I love what I do, and I hope that my efforts help encourage and support diverse students to chase their dreams of becoming a Marquette nurse. That’s what this is all about.”

As a first-generation college student herself, Terrie can truly identify with students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds. Her passion for diversity shines through every aspect of her work as she applies her knowledge and experience day and in day out to help students succeed and in turn assist in creating a dynamic nursing workforce.

One nominator notes that Terrie “creates a safe and respectful environment for questions and discussions.”

Terrie’s wisdom and expertise resonates with a wide range of students. She emphasizes the importance of appreciating varied cultures and deepening our collective understanding of diversity.

Project BEYOND-2 is an initiative at Marquette that seeks to encourage students from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue a rewarding career in professional nursing. Through the program, faculty, advisers and community leaders assist selected students in achieving academic success.

Over the years, Terrie has connected with several local schools such as Carmen Schools of Science and Technology, a middle and high school that serves underrepresented areas of Milwaukee. Her Project BEYOND-2 students gain valuable leadership experience, working alongside her to connect with Carmen students and make meaningful, lasting impact on the community.

It is clear from Terrie’s multiple nominations that her commitment to helping students has made a statement. Nominators call Terrie an “unsung hero,” and they attest that her many contributions to diversity and inclusion inspire those around her to be the best versions of themselves and make the world a better place.

“She encourages me to expand my leadership as a minority nurse and find my voice to address diversity and inclusion to a broader audience,” a colleague says.
