An Advent Reflection: St. Luke’s Account of the Annunciation
During Advent, we celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation, that God assumes the beauty and fragility of our humanity in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. To enter that mystery, we will consider St. Luke the evangelist’s story of the Annunciation as presented in his gospel. The Virgin Mary’s great “yes” to God initiates the movement into the mystery. Join Marquette University Chaplain Rev. James Flaherty, S.J., as we reflect on how Mary helps us to respond to God’s invitation to us during this Advent Season. Henry Tanner’s painting of the Annunciation and the poetry of Denise Levertov will also assist us in the reflection.

Fr. Jim Flaherty, S.J., is a member of the Upper Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus. He currently serves as university chaplain at Marquette University. He earned his BA in history at Marquette, his Master of Divinity and Master in Sacred Theology at the former Berkeley Jesuit School of Theology, and his MA and Ph.D. in philosophy at the New School University in New York City. He taught philosophy at Marquette and Loyola of Chicago. He served six years as pastor of Gesu Parish on the Marquette campus. Finally, he has preached and directed Ignatian retreats at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh, WI, as well as Demontreville Retreat House in St. Paul, MN, and Bellarmine Jesuit Retreat House in Barrington, IL.
