What is Oral Pathology?

Oral Pathology (Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology) is a sub-specialty of Dentistry that deals with disease of the oral cavity including oral mucosa (lining of the oral cavity), bones, salivary glands, and adjacent structures.

Diseases affecting these structures may present with symptoms including but not limited to pain, soreness, bleeding, burning, alteration in taste, dry mouth, numbness, tingling. These symptoms may be associated with findings such as a swelling, ulcer/s, fluid filled blisters, masses and growths including warts and polyps, sloughing of oral mucus membrane (skin lining the mouth), white patch, red patch, color change (typically gray, brown, tan or black), loose teeth, non-healing sores including extraction sockets, gum swelling, bone exposure, increasing difficulty in speech and/or swallowing, lump on the tongue, lump in the throat, etc.

These changes may affect one or many parts of the mouth with varying degree of severity. Some of these changes may represent oral pre-cancer and cancer.
