Renewable Energy Technology and Integration Engineering Certificate
Develop the capabilities required to solve complex energy problems. As energy sources transition to lower carbon emitting technologies, there is a growing need for engineering professionals to manage the transition and drive improvements in efficiency, cost, resource capture (wind, solar), sustainable materials and manufacturing.
Connecting the renewable energy generation to the end use is essential for innovative controls to optimize energy output and capture. The certificate electives provide the technical rigor to develop engineering solutions to these industry challenges.
Flexible, affordable graduate certificates
We recognize the importance of flexibility to those pursuing graduate education, especially to practicing engineers. That’s why we offer you the opportunity to complete our certificates on a full- or part-time basis.
The Dean of the Opus College of Engineering is offering tuition credits to support engineers completing certificates. Students who complete six credits of a certificate will be eligible for a two-credit tuition discount on the remaining six credits. For more information, please speak with our admissions specialist.

Expanding depth and breadth of knowledge
The program allows engineers from a variety of disciplines to expand their depth of knowledge in renewable energy technology and integration, while also allowing the opportunity to develop essential skills around technical leadership, communication and multi-disciplinary perspectives that will help them to succeed as they continue to advance in their professional careers.

Other courses as approved by the Certificate Faculty Sponsor, the EECE director of graduate studies (DGS) and the chair of the EECE department.
Upon certificate completion, students will be able to:
- Analyze complex renewable energy problems.
- Communicate and effectively explain renewable energy problems and proposed solutions to a wide range of stakeholders (I.e. professional engineers, corporate decision makers, government regulators, etc.).
- Integrate advanced electrical energy concepts, modern engineering tools, and best practices to recommend technologically appropriate and responsible solutions.
- Reflect on the purposeful and meaningful contribution of each course to achieve the professional growth desired through the certificate.
By connecting class work to real-world engineering organizations, industry and academia can come together to embrace new ways of thinking and working together to create innovative solutions to solve industrial grand challenges.

This program has rolling admission, which means you may apply any time before the following dates:
- Fall term admissions- August 1 (June 1 for international applicants)
- Spring term admissions- December 15 (October 15 for international applicants)
**The application deadline for the Spring 2021 term has been extended to January 15, 2021.
Merit-Based Financial Aid Deadlines
Applicants who wish to be considered for merit-based financial aid (graduate assistantships/fellowships) should be aware of the following merit-based financial aid deadlines by which all applicant materials must be received by the Graduate School:
- Fall (August) Term: February 15
- Spring (January) Term: November 15
- Summer (May) Term: April 15
Read all application instructions prior to beginning an application.
- A completed application form and fee online.
- Copies of all college/university transcripts except those from Marquette.1
- Two letters of recommendation addressing the applicant's suitability for completing graduate-level course work: one from a professor familiar with the student's academic achievement and one from a work supervisor (engineer) or another professor. Waived if the applicant's GPA is 3.000 or above.
- Statement of purpose, describing reasons for pursuing an advanced degree and career goals.
- (For international applicants only) a TOEFL score or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.
Upon admission, final official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities, with certified English translations if original language is not English, must be submitted to the Graduate School within the first five weeks of the term of admission or a hold preventing registration for future terms will be placed on the student’s record.
Ayman EL-Refaie (PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is the Werner Endowed Chair in Secure/Sustainable Energy and holds over 45 patents. Dr. EL-Refaie has 12 years of corporate experience at GE Global Research Center (Power Conversion) and General Motors Advanced Technology Center.
Nathan Weise (PhD, University of Minnesota) is the lead of a DOE-ARPA-E CIRCUITS program focused on power converters and a DOE ARPA-E BREAKERS program focused on DC circuit breakers. He has industrial experience with RTI Technologies on wave energy converters and was a finalist in the Department of Energy Wave Energy Prize.
Nabeel Demerdash (Ph.D., University of Pittsburgh), is the Director of the Simulation of Electrical Machines, Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (SEMPEED) Consortium in collaboration with industry. Dr. Demerdash received numerous Technical Field, Prize Paper, and Research Excellence awards for his pioneering contributions to electric machine and drive systems design.
Arthur J. Harrington, Esq (Law, University of Wisconsin-Madison) is Shareholder and Attorney at Godfrey and Kahn’s Environmental and Energy Strategies Practice. Art has over 25 years of extensive experience in environmental and energy litigation at the state and national level and is a recognized leader of Brownfield remediation. Mr. Harrington also serves as co-chair of the Policy Committee of the Midwest Energy Research Consortium.
Noelle Brigham, P.E., ENV SP (MS, Marquette University) has over 20 years of global experience as a registered Professional Engineer in the Consumer Products and Consulting Industries. Her expertise includes air pollution control, industrial ecology, and sustainability with S.C. Johnson, MWH Americas (Stantec), and CH2M Hill (Jacobs).
