FEDERAL WORK STUDY AND MARQUETTE STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
FEDERAL WORK STUDY (FWS)
Federal Work Study (FWS) is a Title IV federal financial aid program that encourages undergraduate and graduate students with financial need to find part-time jobs, allowing them to earn money to help pay education expenses. It is awarded to students based on their demonstrated financial need using information from the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students earn this money by working and receiving bi-weekly paychecks. It does not automatically go towards their cost of attendance expenses. Also, FWS students are not required to work, but it is a benefit that may help them find work. Through this program, students may earn up to the amount listed on their financial aid award, and their wages will be subsidized by the federal government. Because of this subsidy, some employers require or prefer students with FWS awards. We recommend that you indicate on your job applications that you have Federal Work Study.
Upon earning their maximum FWS eligibility, students may continue working via Marquette Student Employment (MSE) at the discretion of their employers. FWS positions can be found in nearly every academic and administrative office on campus, as well as in Marquette recreational facilities, the libraries and residence halls.
Marquette Student Employment (MSE)
Marquette Student Employment (MSE) positions are available to any student at Marquette University regardless of their financial aid status. Jobs are available on and off campus, and many employers hire both Federal Work Study (FWS) and MSE students. MSE positions are not federally funded, and students are not limited to the amount listed on the aid award offer.

NEW HIRE PAPERWORK
What it is?
All new employees are required to complete paperwork, the final step of the hiring process, upon securing an on-campus job or an off-campus community service job. You may not complete the documentation before your official hire date in JobX. On the first date employment or within 72 hours after your start date, the new employees will come to Marquette Central Zilber Hall Room 121 to complete the Form I-9 and OSHA Hazard Communication Training. They will also receive information about completing the W-4 and signing up for Direct Deposit.
What Should I Bring?
When coming to Marquette Central, please bring a copy of the JobX Placement form that your employer will give you and original (not copies of) documentation that verifies your identity and employment authorization. The List of Acceptable Documents describes what meets these criteria. International Students will also need to bring the following items to Zilber Hall: unexpired passport, I-94 card, I-20 form, and confirmation for authorization to work on campus form from the Office of International Education.
What Should I Expect To Do?
A Marquette Central advisor will distribute and explain what needs to be completed on the I-9 and OSHA Hazard Communication Training, and you will complete these forms on site. The advisor will also inspect your documentation and complete section 2 of the Form I-9. Once done, the Marquette Central advisor will date stamp your JobX Placement Form, and you can return this form to your employer as a sign that your new hire paperwork is all completed.
You will receive separate handouts to take home with you to complete the W-4 form online through MyJob and setting up Direct Deposit through CheckMarq.
Do I Need to Complete Another Form I-9 If I’ve Already Completed One?
Form I-9s last the duration of your Marquette career if there has not been any breaks in your attendance with the university since the Form I-9 was completed.
What Happens If I Don’t Complete My Form I-9?
According to Federal law, student employees who fail to complete their Form I-9 are not eligible to work. Any hire that had been made will summarily be terminated until the student completes the required paperwork.
