ACTING
“A liberal education is a freeing education. Its aim is to release the student from the bonds of ignorance, intolerance, parochialism and prejudice. A liberal education seeks to free the student for citizenship in the realm of the intellect.”
— From the department mission statement
As a performer at Marquette, you will have the opportunity to explore the craft of acting from many different perspectives. There is no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to acting, and no two artists approach their work exactly the same. Through a range of curricular opportunities, you will be challenged to grow and develop the techniques that will serve you in school and in your career.
Participation in our varied main stage performances and student-driven productions will put your studies to the test. Guided by faculty as well as regular guest artists as part of our production season, you will build upon your lessons in a safe and professional environment.
Classes in voice and movement, stage combat, and dance are available to augment your regular acting classes. In addition to these performative classes, your Career Preparation and Professional Auditions classes will prepare you to feel confident and ready once you graduate from Marquette.
We strongly believe that all theatre artists must be well-rounded. Not only must an actor have some understanding of the technical aspects of theatre, he or she must have a comprehensive understanding of life. “An actor must interpret life, and in order to do so must be willing to accept all the experiences life has to offer” (James Dean). A liberal arts degree offers the kind of breadth of knowledge an actor must have, and at Marquette you will receive a rigorous foundational education that will serve you as an actor, an artist, and an enlightened individual.
